Writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming film “The Trial of the Chicago 7” has found found a home at Netflix, and on Wednesday the streaming service provided a first look at the film with nine photos. Netflix also announced the film’s release date: October 16, 2020.

Based on a true story, the film follows the violent protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention that led to the organizers of the protest — including Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale — being charged with conspiracy to incite a riot and a trial that became one of the most notorious in history.

Sorkin’s drama is already pegged to be a major awards contender, and the current political climate – and release three weeks ahead of Election Day – will certainly add to the film’s ability to resonate with audience.

Sorkin has assembled a star-studded cast for the film, featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Keaton, as well as Frank Langella, John Carroll Lynch, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Jeremy Strong and Kelvin Harrison Jr., among many others.

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” debuts on Netflix October 16, 2020.
